What I love most about indie games is how they experiment with atmospherical art styles and unique gameplay to create something that truly stands out of the mainstream. FAR: Lone Sails is one of those stylish games which is a real treat for the eyes whilst offering an experience that stays with you.
Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where the oceans have dried up and humanity has escaped for a better world leaving you behind, FAR: Lone Sails by Okomotive is an adventure game where you pilot a massive locomotive with sails. Part puzzle platformer, you’ll need to collect resources and manage your vessel’s power needs whilst traversing across the lonely plains. Occasionally, you’ll get caught up in abandoned settlements and will need to figure your way out. There’s no direct story; instead, the story is revealed through hints within the world as you push on to find civilization.
What I’ll whine about:
I’m not much of a puzzle person and will admit I got stumped a few times whilst trying to progress through the levels as the solution isn’t always obvious!
What I’ll gush about:
The world is simply beautiful in its bleakness, and I loved exploring it. Every time I reached a new settlement or point of interest, I was eager to see what the game would reveal next. Seeing to my locomotive’s needs was also fun, and I became attached to my vessel as though it was a character all on its own.
Final Words
FAR: Lone Sails is a short but sweet adventure into an unknown world that was full of atmosphere.
