by Isa Medina
I am quickly becoming a big fan of Isa Medina’s Magical Artifacts Institute series of novellas, as you can probably tell by my review of the first book Finding Fae Artififacts.
The sequel carries off where the first left as main character Maddie arrives on the first day of her new job at the institute, only to discover that its owner and grumpy love interest Aidan has mysteriously disappeared into the land of Faerie. If Maddie stands any chance of starting her dream job as an artifact hunter, then she’ll need to risk life and limb by entering the treacherous world of the Fae on a rescue mission. And maybe she’ll snag a few artifacts on the way, eh?
What I’ll whine about:
We don’t get to spend too much time in Faerie as Maddie is trapped inside a rather creepy Fae mansion, thus I’d love to learn more about the Fae and their culture and society which is briefly touched upon here.
What I’ll gush about:
I absolutely love the sense of adventure in these novellas which carries on in the sequel. These are short and sweet cheerful feel-good stories, though don’t let me fool you; there’s thrilling action and monster battles as well. I especially like that it’s Maddie who is attempting to rescue the love interest, and the banter between the two is great fun. Maddie herself is an incredibly optimistic if not ditzy main character, and her voice comes through brilliantly. She’s the kind of trouble you want to run into.
Final Words:
Reading these books honestly reminds me of The Mummy films; full of wholesome adventure, treasure hunting, exotic monsters, and dripping with good humour. I can’t wait to see what trouble Maddie finds herself in next.
